  1. Coffee? Hot, dark, and strong. Or, (though it doesn’t fit the meme) my summer drink is like my ex-girlfriend’s soul- cold, black and bitter.

    1. In New England (and especially at a New England Dunkin’ Donuts) one can just say regular, this indicates an average amount of cream and sugar. And yes, I know Dunkin Donut;s is now just Dunkin, I am not down with that traitorous name change and denying the true purpose of a Dunkin Donuts. Although sadly their donuts have become less and less palatable over time as they try to reduce the calories.

  2. I need to show my son the possum (he officially hates possums. Everyone knows this. His employees give him things with possums on them. He shows them off).

And I laughed out loud at the Pepsi/Coke/Dr. Pepper meme. (“You see, dear, when two classes love each other very much…”)

      1. Wallcat #2 reportedly climbs humans to look upon the world from on high. Said critter lived in the hood of my jacket while I was feeding him and tryng to find him a home. Zoomies have commenced and not-as-teeny void is attempting to visit the speed of light. At three AM.

      2. I’m not fond of them. But I miss the concept of the Possum Drop. Every New Year’s Eve in Brasstown, NC they used to place a (well-fed and cared for) possum in a Plexiglass box, run it up a pole and drop the box slowly at midnight. Of course PETA hated it, even though the possum liked it enough to turn up at the right time of year for his annual spa week.

I do wear my, “The Other, Other White Meat,” t-shirt even though I’m not hungry enough to want to sample possum.

    1. Strong enough to lift a submarine, black enough to sing delta blues, sweet enough to make you chicken soup when you’re feeling under the weather, and big enough to make even the Karens think thrice.

That doesn’t look like a Highlander.

Did you hear about the fundraiser concert for the British Navy? They’re calling it Lime-aid.

    • First of all, it’s “Batmen,” not “Batmans.” That shouldn’t be even remotely difficult.
    • Second of all, can we re-design the Statue of Liberty to have a “buh-bye” action? Even better, design her to look like Sydney Sweeney? It might give the huddled masses a little more shade.
    • Third, an old bud of mine lives alone, and has started feeding neighborhood cats, and they all seem to know him, trust him, and like him. One night, another hungry critter showed up, and my bud reached down to give it a scritch in the dark. Imagine his surprise when he found out he was petting an opossum!

    1. Leave the current one as is, and do another one pointing back home. I like the Indiana basketballer woman for that as in the meme, as she’s more statuesque (heh). If a curvy Sydney Sweeney one is desired we can do a third. A plethora of colossa (colosae? What’s feminine plural again?) would be acceptable, though not Sydney is a little thing at 5’3” in height, so her statue would be a bit less imposing vertically, if still casting much shade.

    2. I’m tired and sore after several days of heavy toil, and I read the first part of 3rd bullet as “Third, an old bud of mine lives alone, and I have started feeding him neighborhood cats”. Upon further review, I see that the cats are being served, not being served. Whew.

  4. The Bernie three panel meme makes me think of the Grinch

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.

Of course given Bernie has no heart to grow three sizes so he will NOT experience an epiphany like the Grinch did on the slopes of Mt. Krumpit. But he will sit and whine and that may be more entertaining. I now hear Bernie in Boris Karloff’s voice a major upgrade from his native whiny nasal accent.

  7. The video game “modern audience” meme is right on. Big companies are literally going under right now because of it.

Of course, it also applies to most any entertainment media right now.

    1. There was much made back a couple decades ago that the big game releases were making way, way more individually and in aggregate than H’wood movie releases, and game studios started to be snapped up as easy-peasy cashflow generators. Of course this meant games became targets just as movie productions already were, with the highly visible AAA acquisitions the highest profile targets of all, and their new owners an easier target for the grifters and colored smoke sellers.

And as a result here we are, with “roll left and die” and “go woke, go broke” in the FO phase in both industries, massive layoffs, relocations, and M&A consolidation.

And flops – don’t ignore the flops. Personally I am skeptical that even “hits” like Nolans’s Odyssey actually broke even, but obvious flops like Supergirl ($250 million to make and market), the new Halo game release ($300 to $400 million dev only) and the new Wolverine game ($305 million), which looks to be flailing with bad reviews, are not corporate profit-friendly results.

Sure, the Spider-Man movie cleaned up for Sony, but that’s one in how many?

The thing that will in the end save gaming is the lower entry cost, as tiny nerds-locked-in-a-room game developers can still hit massive industry-stomping home runs. We’re not quite there yet with movies, but from what I am seeing we will be in the next five years. Then both game studios and movie studios will be in a quandary: Do they accept becoming simply distribution services? Or will they try to chase some other business model?

          1. Sure, but That Guy was doing it old school. The next stretch will have people doing full up movies fully AI generated with no capital investment in lights and soundstages and office equipment (the stuff that got That Guy in trouble, well, plus pissing of Paramount lawyers – That Guy is the reason there was not one more ‘season’ of Star Trek Continues), just teh cost of compute power in the cloud somewhere and of AI tokens.

      1. That might be part of it. But part of it appears to be that the field is drawing people who literally do not like the games that gamers like. You can see this in their social media posts that complain about all of the things that tend to appear in popular games. Then they try and change successful long-running franchises to things that they like saying that they’re “expanding the audience”, and alienate the people who made the franchise popular in the first place.

Why do they get involved in making games if they don’t actually like the games? The main guess that people have come up with is that they know games are popular, and want to be associated with that popularity. So they get hired onto those projects as a prestige sort of thing.

And yes, the low bar to entry means that it’s not hard for a small team to create a good game (and it’s even easier now with AI). The main problems in that case become distribution, and getting people interested in your game. Developers have to go elsewhere to find a publisher. Believe it or not, this was how Electronic Arts got its start waaaaay back in the day. They published and distributed fun games made by quirky independent developers. Now, however, it can all be handled by digital distribution platforms, such as Steam (though many developers still choose to work with a separate publisher, so presumably there’s an advantage to it). That leaves getting interest in the game prior to release. That’s on the developer, and will always rely on at least a little luck.

        1. There was a push a few years ago for “game developer” degrees In college curricula. I assume many of those drank the indoctrination kool-aid and were launched into jobs at the big AAA game developers via DEI mandates to poison the well and “fix” all those icky gamer things.

I have seen commentary noting gaming was (and remains) one of the last remaining male-centric bastions, so obviously game development needed HR Karen game devs to “fix” that. And who needs those icky boyz when the new super-inclusive games will expand games appeal to the “modern audience” [Critical Drinker voice].

Their problem, of course, is that the “modern audience” does not actually exist, and since a fantasy construct of their theology can’t buy any games, they just don’t sell. So they got one shot and it failed, and now they’ve been laid off and are back to being baristas.

            1. Of course not. Gamers need to learn the “proper” way to have fun.

I believe our hostess has a saying/expression for the AAA devs:

              “These are my middle fingers.”

              1. That was GamerGate 1. GamerGate 2 is currently ongoing, and has seen a near solid stream of AAA game failures. Nearly every single major game for about two years now (I think) has been a massive failure from a sales standpoint. At least one major studio, Ubisoft, has all but collapsed. AFAIK, the only things keeping them going are back catalogue sales, and micro-transactions in Division 2 and Rainbow 6: Siege (both of which are several years old), and bankruptcy has been discussed (iirc Tencent bailed them out a bit in exchange for almost 10% of the company’s stock). GTA6 (a Rockstar title) is scheduled to release in November, and people are watching closely to see how it does. Given past GTA numbers, it’s expected to do amazingly well. But if it doesn’t, it would be disastrous for Rockstar, which has spent a huge amount of money making it.

And why are so many games doing so poorly?

Let’s look at the new Wolverine game that was just released. Wolverine is a very popular character. Insomniac, the developer, made the very popular Spiderman game, which was a lot of fun to play and had a good story (mostly). Three Marvel games later, and they’ve got a game that won’t let you fail quick-time events, and won’t let you die even on the hardest difficulty if you put the controller down during the motorcycle sequences (if you actually try to play, though, the game works as you would expect). Players are bypassing grunt fights merely by taking non-standard routes (i.e. not going out of bounds on the level map but merely not following the “expected” route) and discovering that the game doesn’t spawn in elements required to progress. And apparently the end of the game implies a gay relationship in the past between Wolverine and Sabertooth. Uh…

Needless to say, both the players and the critical reviewers are strongly rejecting it.

There might be some signs of sanity, though. Investors have taken note, and are largely reserving their money for non-Western companies. And while the new head of XBox Games didn’t initially get a warm welcome from the players as she looked like a diversity hire (she’s an Indian woman), she appears to be making at least some of the right moves. Among many other things, there’s speculation that the new Blizzard announcements at Blizzcon just over a week ago (which are getting some initial positive reception) were due to her putting pressure on Blizzard (which was acquired by Microsoft when it bought Activision a few years ago).

                1. Heh.

Another example that’s literally happening *as I type this*.

A developer named “Double Fine” decided to crowdfund its next title on Kickstarter. The crowdfunding is ongoing, and has apparently been going reasonably well for an indy title. Stretch goals are being offered and met.

                  Or rather, they were…

Double Fine announced that one of the stretch goals would be to bring on a voice actress named Erika Ishii. I don’t recognize the name, but from what others are saying she’s an arrogant, pushy, obnoxious hard left woman.

Funders told Double Fine they don’t want her involved.

Double Fine doubled down (heh) in support of her.

A number of backers (unfortunately I don’t know how many) are now getting refunds.

                  Oops!

        1. I have seen rumors that at $1.7 billion [Dr. Evil voice] total box office to date, it made a lot of money for Nolan due to clauses in his deal which gave him escalating fractions of the total gross as the movie reached certain total gross milestones, but not so much for Universal, who were basically desperate to sign Nolan and so kinda gave away the store.

Basically the amount needed to “break even” (i.e. the total needed for the half of the box office total which the studio gets to pay for production costs plus marketing costs plus the various cut-of-gross deal payouts) jumped just out of reach of “even” as it made more and more at the box office.

The Spider-Man star is rumored to have a similar escalating-fraction-of-gross deal with Sony, but it is said to not be nearly as generous as Nolan’s deal with Universal.
