I Have a Post Started But It’s Not Happening Today

It’s already been a strange day. Nothing bad, mind you, just…. weird. And it’s afternoon, and I have a gazillion things to do including re-typeset Witchfinder, finish a novella and– maybe a couple of songs.

I’m still cleaning up from big dinner yesterday. (The dishes. No, really. I use all the dishes, you know?)

So I’m not going to post now. I’m going to do the beginning of the world’s most epic promo post tonight, with writers who volunteered for this (If you want to volunteer, post either in comments or in Twitter) and Holly will collect you into a list. You don’t even have to be indie, the only requirement is that you not be afraid to associate with this blog.

For now, to mollify you, I’m posting mildly salacious pictures. See the boobies above.

There’s also:

And:

On the serious side, consider this an open thread to discuss the rescue of our airman or other amazing good news.
I’m going to go do work, and will be back this evening.

Love you all.

  1. I also like the “Liquid Cats” video immediately after the Baby Beaver video. But WPDE won’t let me post. Well it does, just it goes into terminal circle wait mode.

Another good reel joke is the job site HOA video. Where the site operator is promoting Mosquito Zapper attractant. “Put all 30 along the road fence line”, where the HOA busybodies are videoing (totally a word) from, “without the bug zapper” …

Baby beaver video. I now follow the rescue on FB reels.

    1. I have found that if I paste a complete URL into the text box, it grinds forever. I split the URL into two parts, paste and splice them together in the box. That works.

    2. Wait, I think I’ve seen that guy. The one who does about three characters in his (blacksmith?) shop. I’m so face-blind (and the voices are so different) that it wasn’t til the third character was added that I picked up it was him for all three (boss, helper, local preacher).

        1. This one does start and end with “it’s legal”. Start that the previously trespassed HOA can protest from the public road and right of way, legal. End with mosquito attractant without the bug zapper every 10 feet on private property fence, is legal. Not nice, but it’s legal.

        2. That’s my attitude. Just so long as it’s legal, and children aren’t hurt.

          Everything else is fair game.

          1. Addendum: even if it’s only semi legal. Or even more-or-less illegal. “Legal” is man’s laws.

  2. Sarah showing off not only ass but beaver? This blog is getting awfully racy!

(But in all seriousness, watch that beaver video. The phrase “stupid cute” (which I think should be a D&D alignment) is used.)

  3. Our son told my beloved he had good news and bad news.

Good news: all the Rodent Control Officer’s kittens have been claimed. (Sigh).

Bad news: the “little Jezebel,” is already pregnant again.

I know he planned to have her spayed, but suspect he’s not ready to have the vet perform kitty abortions to do it. But wow, does the little minx work fast.

  4. Hearsay is that animals sometimes sense and are disquieted by the preludes to a storm or earthquake, or whatever.

(I wonder a bit about the sources and methods of these claims, but I basically spend all my time inside and avoid animals. I basically don’t know anything from direct observation, and my grasp of what I have read could have major problems.)

This can sometimes be used as a metaphor for complicated human behavior things.

I don’t particularly weight my own impressions now very highly, I am undermedicated for allergies.

I would tend to find this year a little overwhelming to follow, and flip flop between jaded and enthused, almost no matter what was going on with the little picture details.

    1. I can confirm from direct experience that cats and other animals can sense the approach of earthquakes. Not, like, in enough time to really warn anyone, seconds at most, but they can totally sense it coming.

    2. We had a minor (richter 3.x something) quake up north in southern Maine back in late summer. Both my cats were near me. One got up from sleeping and started looking around dazedly just before, the other got up and raced to a closet his favorite hiding place. Shortly after the odd feline behavior, there was an odd rumble like a large truck passing by on the street. No such vehicle was present, and internet and government sites confirmed there had been a small earthquake with the Epicenter just off the Maine/NH coast at about that time.

The second cat (my void cat) also is a thunderstorm detector. He will head for his hiding place (aka the Fortress of Solitude) 15-20 minutes before the storm is visible over the horizon. Another cat I had (Spike of blessed memory) would hide repeatedly 30-40 minutes before a storm. This I attribute to either superior Feline hearing, or perhaps noting a pressure drop or other atmospheric change. Both Spike and Hiccup (my void) hate/hated thunderstorms with a passion so it seems likely they learned to associate whatever change it is with the despised thunderstorm via conditioning. I wonder if the Earthquake detection isn’t based on some similar detected feature that is below detection level for humans.

      1. Grandpa’s neighbor had a beagle named Squeaky.

Somehow Squeaky got it into his doggie brain that the farm office at Grandpa’s was the safe place to be in a thunderstorm. So we knew, if we found him under the desk, that the canine early warning weather alert had gone off, and you weren’t going out to the hay field that afternoon.

Eventually, the neighbor retired and moved closer to his grandkids. We got a call after a storm – it seems Squeaky took off just before the weather got bad. Someone picked him up as a stray 20 miles away, on a pretty good heading towards Grandpa’s desk.

  5. Artemis crew about to go out of contact for about 40 minutes. Current view of Crescent moon and Crescent Earth. Pilot quoted Christ.

I admit, I would feel a bit better if NASA hadn’t said, “See you on the other side,” and gotten the same words in reply. I can’t help but hear that in Bill Murray’s voice.

NASA spokeswoman just said, “How great Thou art,” almost absently. My, what a change.

  6. Sarah, if you’re around…. I’ve formatted the novel, but I’m not sure whether to use 11pt or 12pt EB Garamond for the body text. I get fifty more pages at 12, but lose 66 cents per sale. Should I go for the cost savings, or make it longer to seem like a better buy?

BTW, MP4 posted about an Indie book contest at Writer’s Digest earlier at Ace’s on the tech thread (comment 78), but I’m sure there’s no way I’d be ready to submit. Anyone else here might.

    1. Um…. The population is getting older. I go with 12, usually, unless it makes the book too large to print (Witchfinder. For NML it would need to be 8pt. and no one reads that.)

      1. Sarah, using the KDP 6×9 template, the 11pt is 325 pages including the front and back matter. For the 12pt, it’s 367 pages.
