Late Posts, etc.

Ending the con exhausted because I’m apparently allergic to something in the hotel, and last night was the first night I slept since we got here. I spent the other nights coughing. Yesterday I finally got cough syrup, and slept. So I’m more than a little wrecked, and trying to rest before we head back so I don’t end up getting ill.

How out of it was I? Well I typed 42 instead of 47 on the title of the post last night and didn’t notice until midday today. Hey, the numbers look alike, right?

The promo post will PROBABLY be Tuesday. There’s a chance of being able to do it tomorrow, but it’s unlikely. OTOH it gives you more time to send me your books to promote, right?

This blog (and this writer) will be back on its regular schedule till Tuesday.

Should I warn you when I’ll be out of pocket, so you can lay in popcorn for whatever will happen in the international sphere?

  1. When is the next weekend conference you and Dan are going to? I want to be forewarned as to when Cuba is falling. And N. Korea. Just saying. CCP might take a week. But Cuba and N. Korea will only take the weekend.

Not that it’ll matter. We’ll still be asleep. Because that is how it works on the West Coast. Especially Saturday or Sunday AM’s.

    1. Kim seems to like Trump, based on what we saw during Trump’s first term. And he hasn’t been particularly obnoxious lately, afaik. So North Korea is probably not getting hit anytime soon..

On the other hand, a sudden announcement of an upcoming visit by Trump to meet with Kim wouldn’t be out of place!

  2. We’re home. Sorry you had allergies; I had two of the best night’s sleep I’ve had in months.

OTOH, I drove us home, got back in time to just head straight for church, went home, had lunch, then drove another 48 miles to the assistant manager’s wedding reception. So, about 200 miles driving. I intend to be a zuccini for the rest of the evening.

        1. I’m dealing with something similar right now (hopefully getting over it), and my sister mentioned early last week that she had something (she wondered if it was COVID again, though she didn’t bother testing afaik). So some bug is likely making the rounds.

        2. No. Staying away from the dealer’s room yesterday made me much better, so I think the soaps (scented) were the problem. Coughing is a manifestation of asthma with me. BUT I hope not to catch anything, which is why I’m imitating the vegetable kingdom.

          1. I’ve managed to avoid the scented soaps, but I dread it when the big Kroger affiliate (department store plus groceries) lays in a stock of scented candles. Doubt it’s an allergen, but it’s a hell of an irritant to my nose and sinus cavities (sinii?). The latter don’t need any incentive to cause trouble, not since Fauci…

            1. Stores that have their make-up/perfume counters right at the venue’s mall entrance? Now they ask to spritz you. But that was not always true. I’ve held my hands up in “stop” position, and said “No.” When that did not stop them, before about the ’90s it didn’t, I’d comment “Where is the restroom? I need to wash this stuff off before the migraine starts.” These days it would be considered assault.

I’m not as bad as some. Have a college classmate who after their office renovated, the out gassing triggered severe reactions. Now can’t tolerate being around anyone wearing scents. Me? I do not like walking through those areas now, but once through, I’m fine. I can’t wear perfume, or a migraine within half an hour. Subtle non-perfume scents, some candle scents (cinnamon being one), I can use.

              1. Mostly unrelated story. Years ago, a co-worker was getting massive migraines at the same time every day. Management was inclined to think she was making it up, as she had no allergies– except opiates.

When they moved her to another desk it stopped.

Finally narrowed it down. Across the cubicle wall, one of our co-workers was Muslim. Apparently, if they can’t wash their hands when it’s time for prayer, there are certain lotions that can be used and be ritually clean.

                Opiat based.

              2. The cinnamon-infused Christmas Pine Cones spell trouble for me. Fred Meyer will usually have some near the entrance, but the worst culprit was the late, lamented JoAnns. They’d put a box or three of the things in the airlock/foyer at the store, ensuring I’d have a drippy nose whenever I had to go there. ($SPOUSE decided during Covidiocy that wearing the face diaper offended her sense of survival*, so whenever practical, I got the shopping duties. She was NOT happy when I blew out my knee in Feb 2021 and she had to do all the shopping until I could drive again.)

(*) Except when doing medical/physical therapy stuff, I’d either use a very thin homemade mask or one of the visor-spitshields. I tried a N95 mask at first, but stopped it when I was about to faceplant at Home Depot. For the medical adventures, I’d relent and use the std blue mask. The PT wasn’t strenuous enough to cause trouble (usually…).

                1. Here is irony for you. Various fresh tree sap set me off sneezing. In particularly pines, true firs (noble), and alders. Luckily, when I was working timber job, it was west coast. Few pines. The few true firs that came through, had been cut long enough that it wasn’t too bad. Alder load, OTOH, I could tell was coming in before it would be turning in, and the load type could be seen. Tree species can be distinguished by scent.

            2. Funny, the 6 months when I didn’t have a sense of smell were when I also wasn’t sensitive to soaps and candles. I have no idea why it worked out that way.

Once upon a “now what?”, I was a security guard at a luxury trailer park / campground. Miami Vice meets Trailer Trash Hood.

The campers built on bus chassis are LandYachts.

  3. Weirdly, both numbers are geeky; 42 is “the answer to life, the universe, and everything” and 47 is a Star Trek reoccurring number…and of course is when Quark, Rom, Nog, and [REDACTED] traveled back in time to visit Earth, on accident. At Roswell.

Occasionally I hear that a lot of women’s clothing does not have enough pockets. Some shouldn’t, of course – a nice clutch just big enough for a Walther PPK and a pack of tissues is right for evening gowns or club wear.

    1. I have never been comfortable with a method of carry that does not attach the firearm to the body. It is too easy to put it down for a moment to free up a hand and lose control of it. YMMV.

Not that I would chance mentioning such to one with a coach gun…

Then I am up late, wired, and only have really stupid jokes.

  5. I’m glad you’re feeling better. (It’s always a privilege to speak with you.) I’m staying an extra night, and paying for two, so I can get a late start if I need the rest. I’ve got a somewhat longer drive than most–and now I have to dodge weather again.

  6. We’re having some family medical drama right now. Nephew with complex medical needs is in the hospital. I don’t know the details, but surgery went well. With luck, he’ll be on the mend.

While this was going on, I e-mailed a dear friend and asked for prayers, and she asked for prayers for her son, who’s struggling with medical stuff compounded by depression.

    Prayers are welcome all around.
