In Fire And Terror Return

*Yes, I really should do a post. But despite having slept a lot, (I woke up at 11:30) I’m very sleepy. I’m coughing less, and definitely on the upswing, but the big lie told about Covid was that only it, uniquely had a post viral syndrome (long covid.) ALL URIs do, and the length of it seems to mirror the severity of the infection. Right now I’m in the part of the proceedings where I seem to need to rest rather a lot. And having written my post for Mad Genius Club I suddenly felt myself exhausted and in need of a nap. I should still write a post. But instead I’m going to re-run this blog’s unofficial anthem. Which, frankly, is very very topical in the lead up to this election. SOME PEOPLE have been all but inviting the Gods of the Copybook Headings to rampage through the nation…. and they are. And it’s going to get worse, win or lose. – SAH*

The Gods of the Copybook Headings

Rudyard Kipling

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,

I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.

Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn

That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:

But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,

So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,

Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,

But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come

That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,

They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;

They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;

So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.

They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.

But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “Stick to the Devil you know.”

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life

(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)

Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “The Wages of Sin is Death.”

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,

By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;

But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew

And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true

That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man

There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.

That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,

And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins

When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,

As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,

The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

      1. The Old Issue.

Here is nought at venture, random nor untrue
Swings the wheel full-circle, brims the cup anew.

Here is naught unproven, here is nothing hid:
Step for step and word for word–so the old Kings did!

Step by step, and word by word: who is ruled may read.
Suffer not the old Kings: for we know the breed–

All the right they promise–all the wrong they bring.
Stewards of the Judgment, suffer not this King !

    1. Indeed. Especially now that even more of his poems and short stories have become available. Elsie Kipling Bainbridge was very careful with what she permitted to be published, and expurgated some of his poems.

    2. As a Kipling nut, I got lucky at one my auctions awhile back. Picked up a 1st edition/printing set of Kipling copyright 1903. The only down side there are 22 books in the set and they all need re-binding( at ~ $80.00 per book. . .) Ah, me.

  1. Off topic, I think. However….I just had an insight into something about what they may try.

Internal polling shows that real votes for Trump are overwhelming. They would have to cheat so much enough wont believe for it to work.

So, instead of Harris receiving 150 million votes, Trump receives them. Now they scream ballot harvesting, box stuffing, etc. They point to the firebombing of boxes, threats of violence etc and stomp their.feet that the vote is compromised.

Just to be certain, violence erupts and martial law is declared.

      1. According to the state’s own QVF records, there are “114,545 Michigan voters who have cast 279,113 ballots from multiple addresses across the state. This results in 164,568 excess ballots as of 10/29/2024.” [Emphasis added for reasons that will become obvious in the very next line of this column.]

Biden won Michigan in 2020 by 154,188 votes found largely in Detroit.

        1. Also in Michigan:

Michigan removes Upper Peninsula clerks from election duties over planned hand count

Because apparently it’s against the law to hand count ballots in Michigan. Thou Must Not Question the Holy Machines, oh no.

‘Research’ shows that ‘machine counting is faster and more accurate than hand counting’.

Faster, I can believe. More accurate? That depends on the machines, and whether they’ve been programmed to report inaccurate results in very specific ways. As some of them have been proven to do.

So even Yoopers aren’t safe from Leftroid election fraud.

        2. I can’t think of a single good reason to prohibit hand counting ballots. I can think of several bad reasons, and they all involve systemic election fraud.

What’s the worst that can happen? You find discrepancies between the hand count and what the machines report. Fine. Investigate the discrepancies and find out why they don’t match. Audit the election. That is what we do in every other case where questionable results are found. It’s what the government does when they don’t trust your tax accounting.

But just mention auditing elections and the Democrats screech RRRAAACISSSM!!!

          Liked by 1 person

            1. Not if it’s a complete audit. When 80 mail in ballots have the same 1 bedroom apartment as the sender address with 80 different names, that’s suspicious. Any precinct with >100% turnout should automatically require that level of audit.

            2. Or you find out that the machines consistently undercounted one candidate and overcounted the other one. That’s what the Democrats are afraid of.

If they’ve got nothing to hide, why are they so desperate to hide it?

  2. Someone book marked an article from City Journal yesterday which could be an illustration for this. The author was proposing that we’re entering an age of rampant and irrational belief (he called it the Endarkenining). For which he named the Enlightenment as cause, because the scientists and skeptics completely discredited all the institutions -church, nation, family- but once the critical impulse started it couldn’t be stopped and is now eating science, rationality, etc.

He also claimed the division of western mankind into a class of intelligent, educated skeptics trained in science, rationality and so forth, over a larger class of common folk who had been, “left behind,” and remain in the realm of superstition and backwardness. And now the upper-class is being devoured and engulfed in irrational modern superstitions, left with no foundation.

His hope was that somehow, the lesser folk could be included in the common tent, and that perhaps a strain of brilliant philosophers would provide a New Foundation for society.

So here we have a devoted follower of the God’s of the Market-Place, not yet ready to admit that sometimes the only way forward is to go back.

      1. Step 1: let in a Leftist. Aww, how adorable, a silly minded young person!

Step 2: promote them to any level of authority.

Step 3: Now all your hires are Leftists and all your serious old guys are retiring or quitting.

Step 4: Create/hire a Human Resources department. It instantly is stuffed to the air vents with Leftists.

Step 5: More Leftists. Less practical people intent on doing the job. More focus on pipe dream projects that sound terrible, work worse, but siphon money from Leftists with money.

Step 6: There is no Step 6. Your company is now an organ of the Left, wholly staffed, owned, and controlled by utter nutters. It might have a familiar name and/or logo, but the stuff innit ain’t what it was. At all.

At some point, the skin suit fails and reality returns, and the vermin fall out of the institution. The top brass land softly in familiar Leftist territory. The lower ones moan and complain, blaming Conservatives. If they are lucky, they get another job that pays the same in another Leftist cause.

Or they go on to infest some other institution that has miraculously survived without Leftist burrowing into it.

It’s a serious problem, with a lot of non-serious proposed solutions. The pragmatic one, focus on the business and ignore politics as much as one sanely can is the best one. Propositions of pikes, human sized vegetable slicers, whirlybird one way ticket skydiving school sans parachutes, knot tying practice with “jump rope,” and the like are not serious ones. So far.

Some businesses are fumbling their way into the lessons their fathers and grandfathers knew, back in the day. Playing politics is a gambler’s game. You play when you have to, but remember it’s not your job. The business is.

It is the responsibility of each private citizen to study for themselves the local lay of the land. Stop the chicanery and malfeasance there before it metastasizes and spreads. Look upon the higher offices with doubt in your heart, and punish those that lie, cheat, and steal. Run for office yourself if you can’t find an honest man to do it for you.

There is the human temptation to go for expediency when one has power. To use it wantonly to force obedience, for their own good. This is evil. We do not do this with adults, because (waves in the direction of the Constitution, History, bloody warfare writ large across the globe for generations upon generations…).

Best we get to it, lads. Every day, in every task we mold ourselves into the man we will become. We are an example to others in life. Show the world your best self. Vote as a duty, work with responsibility, act with honor, and speak the truth whenever you open your mouth.

And when you do, reality will come calling in the form of a captured and corrupted legal process. How many resources has Elon had to waste because a bunch of ecoloons tied him up in court? A huge part of the reason our manufacturers fled the US is simply that it was too expensive to deal with the bureaucracy.

Remove all legal options, and what’s left?

      2. Bearing in mind that the ‘Enlightenment’ produced as two of its chief luminaries Voltaire, who wanted to erase the Catholic Church from the earth, and Rousseau, who wanted the State to indoctrinate children from birth to be obedient little cogs in his idea of Utopia – well, there’s a lot of undoing that needs to be done.

Some of the great intellectual figures of the eighteenth century were giants for whose work we should all give thanks. And some were self-promoting frauds hatching out the eggs of future tyrannies. It was the latter group who came up with the term ‘Enlightenment’ to describe themselves, as if all previous people had been idiots dwelling in darkness. I regard the label itself with the deep suspicion that a cautious man will have for any label found on a patent medicine.

      1. DJT’s big accomplishment is the creation and now reinforcement and expansion of a coalition to oppose the self-annointed.

The people who all think they are the smartest person in the room, like Barry Soetoro, Brandon himself (moreso as he fades, unless Frau Doktor Jill is glaring at him), and Kammy too, are absolutely certain they know what is best for everyone. They have a phone! They have a pen! (It is funny how Kammy was publicly bragging about that exact same power by diktat in the speech they used in the recent powerful ad as Barry did – she might just be her plagiarizing his stuff though given the timing). They know, so you should just wear the mask and eat ze bugs.

Nope. Not gonna. Nobody put that oil on your head but you.

      1. Sometimes moderation is what is needed. Rest need not be passive. One of my best friends found dancing to be restful. Find something that soothes the soul.

Also, a good soup, hot bath, and a blanket aren’t the worst things that could happen. Take your time. You’ll be up cursing at leftists again and scribbling up a storm before you know it.

It will still be there after a nap.

So, maybe it won’t be done but at least you’ll be rested.

This is a battle and as every soldier knows you don’t stand if you can sit, don’t sit if you can lie down, don’t stay awake if you can sleep and eat and hydrate every chance you get.

You can’t help others if you wear yourself out.
