Energy Budget

So, Sarah, why don’t we have a promo post today?

I meant to do a promo post, I did. I’ve been sitting here for hours, and mostly my big battle has been “stay awake.”

So, what have I done that was so tiring? Nothing much.

But yesterday we had a Hun meetup at the Cosmosphere and dinner at the Carriage Crossing in Yoder, KS. (I don’t announce them here for a reason. It’s too open as it is too open/exposed. If you are on Facebook joining the diner will get into these, though I don’t know when the next one will be. We’d like to do it more often, but–)

Anyway, there were a lot of people — for me, at this point I’m mostly a recluse — and apparently it made me exhausted.

I kept thinking “I need to do this” AND I had a list, but falling back to “Don’t fall asleep.”

I thought I was just being lazy, until I saw myself in the mirror and I’m almost as pale as my white sweater. So, clearly there’s something physical going on.

Probably a combination of still recovering from the big illness (I had an appointment this week and was told if I’m good I’ll have recovered by the end of the year) and introvert exhaustion.

I have a guest post for tomorrow and will try to do the promo post in the afternoon. I’m sorry the schedule is such a mess. This too, hopefully, shall pass.

(PS – Thank you John S. for the chocolate. It arrived fine, and we’re eating it VERY slowly, because each of them is super-special. I’d email back, but I don’t know which of the three John S. is you, so please accept my undying gratitude. Dan’s too, because he’s “helping” me with them. – SAH)

  1. That’s me; wish I could have also sent the Scotch and Coffee it was supposed to be paired with.

Had those in Scotland when we did our distillery tour in 2015.

  2. You know, it’s perfectly acceptable to just make like a drying sweater in the sun, and nap. Or, if too cold, bundle up in a giant fluffy blanket with a big mug of hot chocolate (keto or not) that you’re surprised is cold every time you wake up (or not cold, if you keep forgetting about the electric mug warmer.) Fire in the fireplace is optional, but it is warming to the soul.

Cat is non-optional, because if you have fluffy blanket, lap, and fire, they will self-install. If discouraged, they’ll self-install while napping… either way, you end up incapussitated.

Because North Texas nearly hit 80 today (even though it’ll be below freezing tomorrow), I spent 45 minutes in the backyard, stretched out in the sun, absorbing all the fusion-powered mental health goodness I can. Too bad we can’t bank sunny days away like we do fat, to burn in hard times, but I’ll refill the well with the real thing instead of the Happy Light when I can.

    1. A week ago Sunday we had a nasty storm with a half dozen short power glitches/outages, big broken branches, and ice/show clogged satellite dishes. That was followed by 6 more days of snow and rain, in an area better known for arid climate and sunny days. Hey, the Cascades are supposed to stop that stuff. Not fair coming from the southwest!

Yesterday, it broke. Clear, cold and windy, but that thermonuclear ball was showing most of the day. Still too rough to work outside, but the walk to and from the shop/barn was pleasant. I found time to work on the Round Tuit project, using an old tent trailer frame to make a land-maintenance trailer. Good times. I needed that break.

  3. We’ve all had weird energy the last few days. Dad got mobility in his knee back and we’re going back to the gym tomorrow. Sister is highly energetic in the mornings, and collapses by the evening(1). Hopefully good news for me coming up before Christmas.

Fatigue all around, we had a terrible election season and we’re looking at insanity with the start of 2025.

Only thing we can do is do our best and get through it.

(1-By funny coincidence, she has plenty of energy to bake, to talk with friends, to do laundry. She doesn’t seem to have energy when cleaning out her stuff in the garage…)

    1. By a funny coincidence, my mom and I went looking for a star ended driver to the battery powered drill, and ended up sorting a whole bin of end wrenches, sockets, drill bits, and such that my dad left on his bench (passed in June) so we could install a piece of antique iron gate in the front window today while it was sunny. I didn’t know that construction screws had a star end rather than a Phillips head so we had to find that first before we could tackle the project. Then we trimmed the little oak parkway tree, and some other things in the mid70s weather…

      1. screws had a star end

Some do, others Phillips. Home Desperate now seems to be stocking the deck screws with the Torx (star) head, so I have a small stash of spare bits.

Somebody came up with big lag bolt-type fasteners that use an 8 pointed “spider” bit. One comes with the box-o-fasteners, but I suspect the bit will wear before I finish the box. Bastards came up with a bit that HD does not stock. Haven’t looked on the ‘zon, and if I have few enough bolts left when the bit dies, I get to choose whether it’s worth finding/buying one. Not recommended. (Don’t recall the brand, but it’s a “replacement” for lag bolts.)

        1. Looks like it’s FastenMaster. and Home Depot carries the bits, but has to ship them to our local store. Not so curiously, there’s only one manufacturer for the bit, and it’s the same outfit that does the screws. And, other Depot stores don’t stock them either, nor does Amazon. Never again. (The driver bit is inherently week, more so than the 6 pointed Torx bits–which are readily available.)

      1. More like it’s my sister’s hoarding instincts. The container is all of her boy-band era stuff and a lot of it is just…stuff.
I really want the container, because the container is big enough to put all of the evacuation bedding and blankets and such, so we have it all in one place.
        …it’s just how things are.

  4. Sarah, just don’t stick something into an electrical outlet.

That would be “shocking”. [Very Very Big Crazy Grin]

  5. Got meme’s today. Expected promotion post to be later.

Get rested. I understand the introvert exhaustion. It isn’t that you don’t want to see everyone. It is just, yea … That. Add that to being sick … Don’t make yourself sicker.

    Please.

  6. Yoder, huh? Dang, that’s local to me. Serves me right for eschewing social media.

Hope you had a good time. I’ve eaten at the Carriage Crossing and enjoyed my meal.
