    the bells are rung,
    The carols gay,
    Let Christmas come,
She’s not writing a post today!

    The baking begun,
    The cats at play,
    The dragon smiles,
    Time to celebrate!

    The L-rd is born,
    The manger laid,
    A Jewish mother’s perfect son,
Oy gevalt and G-d be praised!

    Let presents flow,
    And cheer be raised,
    Goodwill to all,
and a not a written post today!

    1. In my defense, I was left unsupervised, and I’m beating my head against a chapter I’ve been too sick to write for over a week…

I’ll just stand here, so you don’t even have to adjust fire for the carp ballista, okay?

Merry Christmas! (And a happy Boxing Day for tomorrow’s bargain hunters.)

    1. Well, I think it’s a post but won’t argue with Sarah if She Demands That We Accept It as “Not A Post”.

  4. Merry Christmas to all!

Off topic a bit, but my Christmas present to myself was to read the Dyce Dare series and I just finished the last book moments ago. (Well, actually it was the French Polished Murder that I just finished, because #3 came in before #2 and I couldn’t wait to read them in order after reading #1). Anyway, I absolutely adored them – as did a friend I recommended #1 to (she got hers on Kindle, which is why she got to finish the series before I did. whine, whine, whine) – and thank Sarah for the wonderful Christmas reading. I want more of them, of course, as any one who’s read them should, but I also find myself REALLY wanting a fanfic of Dyce and co. crossing over with the Spy x Family manga/anime. I think E and psychic Anya would have a great time together and Dyce and cooking-challenged, assassin Yor could have some interesting chats. Any of you writers up for that challenge? :)

      1. Hurray! More cozy reading! I definitely hope you have a not totally crazy year – not just for more Dyce, but because you really need a not totally crazy year.

I did read Draw One in the Dark after Dipped, Stripped, and Dead and enjoyed it. I REALLY like how in the Dyce mysteries you reference what’s happened in the Shifter universe without it being a major matter. (Not the best way to put it, but I think you can figure out what I mean.) It’s subtle and fun if you know about the other series, but it doesn’t hurt the Dyce story if you don’t. The tone of the two series is different, but the references work. I have a couple more books on my TBR pile before I can hit Gentleman Takes a Chance – I will FINALLY read The Return of the King for the first time – but it’s on the 2024 reading list! :)

Thanks again for the all the great reading you provide!!!!

      1. Here’s one recipe worth passing along:

Israeli mom who stalled Hamas captors with cookies shares life-saving recipe
The Israeli mom who famously used her baking skills to stall her Hamas kidnappers on Oct. 7 is now sharing the cookie recipe that saved her family’s life.

“I had them wrapped around my little finger, those nasty monsters,” Rachel Edri says in an Instagram video as she baked.

Edri, who successfully distracted five Hamas gunmen until an Israeli SWAT team rescued her and her husband, shared the recipe for the cookies she made for the terrorists.

“Friends, for two and a half months, you’ve been driving me crazy for the recipe for the cookies I baked for the monsters, so I’m saying to you once and for all, I made them date cookies, chocolate chip cookies, Moroccan machine cookies,” she said, according to a translation from the Jerusalem Post.

Recreating the chocolate chip version that won the gunmen over, Edri listed the ingredients as a packet of baking powder, half a cup of brown sugar, a tablespoon of white sugar, two cups of flour, two eggs, and 150 grams of softened butter, plus the chocolate addition.

Edri went on to mix the ingredients in a bowl and cut out small circles of dough. After flattening them, she placed them in an oven preheated at 170 degrees Celsius, or 338 Fahrenheit.

Personally, I’d have expected the cookies be the Purim standard, hamantashen:

The name hamantash is commonly viewed as a reference to Haman, the villain of Purim, as described in the Book of Esther. The pastries are supposed to symbolize the defeated enemy of the Jewish people.[5] The word tash means “pouch” or “pocket” in Yiddish, and thus may refer to Haman’s pockets, symbolizing the money that Haman offered to Ahasuerus in exchange for permission to destroy the Jews. In Hebrew, tash means “weaken”, and the hamantash may celebrate the weakening of Haman and the hope that God will weaken all of the enemies of the Jews.[Wikipedia]

    1. We found a way to make green bean casserole even better– add a bag of shredded cheddar.

I think next time bacon goes on top with the frenchfried onions.

      1. Stir-fried green beans with onions and bacon.

If you really want to get decadent, spread those on a baking sheet, sprinkle the cheddar on top of them, and bake until the cheese just starts to brown.

I’ve been roasting potatoes with olive oil, finely minced rosemary and garlic lately. Those damn things are addictive. And I haven’t managed to have left overs of them yet, either.

  6. Well, you sent us a nice card, anyway!

Felt like a million people over here, although I didn’t even have seven until I was putting the last food on the table at 6:30. (My family is psychic in that way; they do it every time.)

Today is the aftermath – and all of the servants seem to think we’re still in Merry Olde England… Ah well, second caffeine infusion is complete, so time to get to it.

I hope that one and all had a wonderful day yesterday – we certainly did.
