Hello, is this thing on?

eye-2286601_1920

It didn’t extend the text very much. It doesn’t let me move that column. Ah well.
For now I just want to point out that contrary to rumors, neither Greebo nor I are cyborgs.
And I don’t have a throne in my volcano lair.
Okay, so I MIGHT be slap happy.
I’ll post something real tomorrow.

    1. To borrow an Instyphrase, “Once you go metal, you’ll never settle (for anything else).”

His wife has/had an artificial heart for a while, IIRC.

  1. >> “For now I just want to point out that contrary to rumors, neither Greebo nor I are cyborgs.”

Considering that I’d never heard such rumors (and a quick search didn’t turn up any either), this seems like an oddly specific thing to deny…

    1. Denying a rumor that you yourself started is one way to establish a reputation. I will neither conform nor deny rumors that I am really some species of space lizard disguised as a human. Since, as nearly as I can tell, the evidence is so far inconclusive.

    2. LOL. Pat Paterson decided to mention he thought I was one while sharing the latest review. Also yesterday I fiddled with the header with weaponized autism till I gave up and did this one as a holder….

  2. Sarah,

If you aren’t a cyborg, you can’t write about the cyborg experience. Quit appropriating cyborg culture!

    😛

(I think my voltage is a bit low today…)

    1. Au contraire. If she is a cyborg, and does write about the cyborg experience, she is not culturally diverse and is only capitalizing on her cyborg privilege.

        1. Queens are required to employ a chaise longue or variant. I thought everybody knew that?

As far as easy chairs go, the Lay-Z-boy is banned but a recliner is permitted if the Evil Overlord likes to have servants shave him in the office.

There is probably a catalog somewhere online — the Office Max of Evil Overlordship — with recommendations for throes, chairs, control consoles, everything the well equipped lair requires. Including laser-tables and comfy chairs for prisoners.

          1. Shaving should be done in a proper barber’s chair, although I’m working on an attachment to a regular chair to give access.

No, seriously, that’s in the notebook.

      1. Only those without good Mad Scientists.

Mad Scientists can work out the problem of how to combine the virtues of a throne with an easy chair.

Especially since thrones are very high ROI. You want to overawe the riffraff as much as possible because that’s the cheapest way to keep them in line.

    1. Volcano lairs require geoengineering to prevent unfortunate eruptions. I recommend a Volcanic Suppression Device, preferably operated by a big red lever which anyone could pull and trigger a story-ending cataclysm with.

      1. Isn’t that exactly what you would say if you did have a volcano lair?

Go around boasting about a thing like that and pretty soon all the Evil Overlords want one, and then it becomes a League of Evil Overlords membership requirement and the prices go through the roof.

        1. Res, in the last year a dozen would-be Evil Overlords lost their lives attempting to create volcano lairs.

Another two dozen lost all of their precious gear when the volcano “objected” to the lair.

I suggest that you try it before disbelieving our Host. 👿

    1. I suddenly have this mental image of the line of strange and interesting people in the waiting room at Rusty’s Collision Repairs, all there to use the bathroom. They keep popping out of a lift into the deep sinkhole out back, the one where he used to toss the used oil and junked cars before the, uh, we don’t talk about the dragon…

    1. I too am watching the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, and note that as one of the five known TV viewers in North America who stopped watching GoT and never went back, I am quite impressed.

The bard’s “Hey! I can fix your poor reputation! I am worth how annoying I am! Watch!” is just priceless.

On the other hand “We are a streaming show so we can show breasts, so we’re doing it a lot!” does seem to interrupt the story pacing at times. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

And normally I don’t like “We’re playing games with time sequence just because we can”, but in this instance it did not bug me as much since it’s basically backfilling/backstorying at length.

        1. Yeah, my take on GoT was basically a variant on Kissinger’s Iran-Iraq-War observation: “It is a pity they can not all lose. I have no interest in any of these characters, so I am not investing any number of my limited number of heartbeats in watching them.”

          1. Heck, I get the impression that even GRRM has lost interest in the characters and feels no impetus to finish the books. He certainly left the last one published unfinished …

      1. The other side of the boob thing is that it made it *really effectively obvious* how evil the magic folks were, and creepy, with the sex scene that had an audience, or the ED scene.

  3. The links to previous entries have moved from the top of the page down to below your text, which means having to find the bottom of the text before I can get to older posts.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I generally check the previous couple of days’ entries regularly, since sometimes there’s interesting stuff.

    1. I use the feed for that but also at work via that link.
Also posting or clicking on a linked comment via the WP bar doesn’t go to the comment in Opera at the house, using Mint, or via Chrome at work on Winblows10, nor does it go there when you post the comment. Just a top of the page refresh.

      1. That also fails to work on Linux running Chromium or Firefox. I suspect its some fundamental issue. WordPress Delenda Erit .

      2. When WordPress was acting up (ie, frequently), I’d post a comment and WP would go to the top of the page until it got around to updating the comments. Might take a few seconds or it might take several minutes. Never have found a way to predict this behavior.

OTOH, it happens most often in ATH. It occasionally happens on TXRed’s blog, but another blogn with few comments (usually comments in the low single digits), never saw it.

        Forget it Jake, it’s WordPress.

          1. It’s doing the same thing if you click on the “commented” link in the e-mails, instead of taking you to the comment. The ultimate in rhetorical questions: Didn’t anyone at WP TEST this thing before unchaining it on unsuspecting users like Sarah and us?

If anything good comes out of the 767 MAX crashes, it will be that Boeing has to pay out so much money that no one will risk an incompletely tested product again. /rant off

            1. and now, it goes to the comments, but the date and time on comments is not a link.
Milady might be digging under the hood, as I think an air pump just went flying past, followed by a vacuum pump . . .

                1. like a GM car worked on by a knob, the air pump outletted into the vacuum pump in a closed circuit and were there to reduce efficiency and hold an unneeded belt.

And I must say, WOW, she really was digging around under the hood last night!

      1. I didn’t change it last night. I changed it mid-day. I’ll put in a custom color, though. Shows white on my monitor.
And TRX, you can adjust your monitor settings for color. Or your browser settings.
BTW this one displays better in Brave. No, I don’t know why. My main one is Firefox.

        1. Here at work the page is white. I shall check Brave, Slimjet, and dig in the Opera settings if it is still yellowish (sorta old parchment color) in that. I got FF too, but it is mostly for “Gotta have FF or IE/Edge to use this website” places. Main has been Opera, though I need to update it manually again via a terminal.

  4. Notice that she didm’t deny having a volcanic lair. She only denied having a throne.

    On another note…

The previous version of the blog had links on each post that would allow you to go to the posts on the days immediately before and after the post you were currently reading. Are those gone now? Or am I not seeing what’s right in front of my nose (possibly because I’m currently accessing the site through my phone)?

  5. The “xxxx comments” link is missing at the top of each topic; I have to scroll down and find where comments start when re-visiting a topic.

So far, useability has taken a big hit with the new look.

    1. AGAIN from the top, it will be changing tonight.
As for those things, they don’t SHOW you in the preview. I’d have to try it out. And I will, but THIS is work time and I have a novel to finish.

  6. Slippery Fox here talking about “Secret Lairs”.

While my Lair doesn’t have a throne and isn’t a volcano lair (volcano lairs are too dangerous to use for long), I do have one where I plan all of my capers.

While not uncomfortable, I don’t reside there. It is of course secret but there’s nothing from the outside to tell the Forces Of Law And Order that “evil doings” are happening inside.

Of course, I’m not a would-be world-conquer or would-be evil overlord, just somebody who quietly appropriates information & property from people who have too much of either and that others would like to purchase.

I mention that I don’t reside in my secret lair. I have a comfortable residence elsewhere. The reason is that if I’m caught in one of my capers, the Forces Of Law And Order would have evidence to convict me for one caper and could search my residence without finding evidence for the capers that they suspect that I have done.

Of course, unlike that silly Jester, I don’t “sign my work”, don’t taunt the Forces Of Law And Order about “you haven’t caught me”, and finally I’m more of a “run like heck” person when I spotted doing a caper than a “you won’t take me alive” person.

While some of that is because my power-set is more suited for “sneaking around and sneaking into places where I’m not wanted” than fighting, I know that the Forces Of Law And Order get seriously annoyed when innocent lives are threatened.

So when the Forces Of Law And Order finally catch me, they’ll be polite rather than treat me like a Dangerous Criminal. Oh yes, I accept the label of criminal but prefer “sneaky criminal” over “dangerous criminal”.

Good bye for now, I got capers to plan and social events to attend. 😀

    1. Of course, unlike that silly Jester, I don’t “sign my work”

It is my understanding that the referenced “Jester” is in fact a franchise operation, in which franchisees pay a percentage of each crime’s take and leave the “calling card” as a red herring fr the FoL&O. Thus modus operandi becomes chaotic, confusing authorities attributing crimes to a deranged individual rather than a broad-based operation and franchisees gain a degree of deniability by having iron-clad alibis for acts perpetrated by other franchisees.

There are other benefits to franchisees but they appear to be trade secrets.

  7. OK looked at the top of the post and saw this:
    Posted at 2:03 AM
Really Madam Hostess? If WordPress is showing the timestamp in
our time zone then 2:03 AM EST is 12:03 MST so just after midnight. It’s not any better if that timestamp is in local.
As you are NOT a Cyborg please try to get some sleep. If there are problems please ask Greebo for help. Even an insomniac cat sleeps 12-14 hours a day they’re masters at it :-). We’re fond of you (and some of us want to see what else happens in the Deep Pink universe).

      1. I can imagine:-). Used to be I’d hang out with college roommates until 3AM. These days I’m happy to be able to get to 10 PM without bumping into things or stumbling over one of the cats. It sounds like you have experienced the “No just one more thing to get it right” behavior that all those that interact with computers and software hit at some point. I’m certain your spouse could describe it to you. In any case please go easy on yourself. Burning both ends of the candle is hard in your 20’s. Burning both ends and the middle is no good at any age :-).

  8. OK, testing a non-reply post with added html tags… Hmm…need some content…here we go:

  10. On my screen, it increased text and comment column width by about 40%.

This is definitely better than terminal comments that look

    l
    i
    k
    e

    t
    h
    i
    s

(yes, some worst-case did that for me).

  11. FYI: the comment replies do not indent or nest on my Samsung 7″ tablet. Everything, comments and their replies, are left justified. Makes it hard to sort out who is commenting on what.

Not a complaint or a request for any action on your part, simply providing a data point in case you need it. (tried posting this last night from my tablet by WP ate it.)
