Ah, zee Romance

Okay, people. I grew up reading Science Fiction and Fantasy and mystery. I’ve still read a limited amount of romance.

For good and sufficient reason, I have decided I need to explore the genre more. Who should I be reading? Suggestions ranging from the popcorn to the serious much appreciated. Preferrably books available for the kindle, because my house is already sinking under the weight of books.

  1. Where to start? Gaelen Foley, Eloisa James, and Stephanie Laurens are great for well-researched historicals. Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Nora Roberts, and Carly Phillips are great for moderns (especially Nora’s new Bride Quartet that she just finished up).

  2. Eloisa James is good. Georgette Heyer for historical.

    As a fellow SF/F nerd, I’d say:
    Nalini Singh’s Psy series
    Gena Showalter’s Alien Huntress series
There’s a good balance of world-building and lurve in both those.

  3. Or for sheer unbelieveable story that ought to end about halfway through the book, not to mention explicit sex, Teresa Medeiros. I’ve got to be in the right mood for almost-smut, but she seems to be popular.

  4. I recommend Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances. The setting is alien enough to me to appeal to the SF geek but she keeps the characters sympathetic without turning them into 20th-century time travelers.

My favorites are Frederica and The Nonesuch. My wife recommends Arabella and The Grand Sophy (atypical, but fun).

    1. Karl,

Actually Georgette Heyer was the FIRST romance writer that I read one book then ordered all others. Dave Freer made me read her. No, really, he stood over me — metaphorically speaking — tapping his foot till I read them all. My favorites are Frederica and Sylvester.
