Blogging Nano

I have decided to commit NaNoWrimo.  I’ve done this before but not for the last two years.  This is because November is a spectacularly bad month for us to try to do this in.  There are two birthdays in the family, in addition to the holiday and preparing for the December holidays.  However, I have a book — The Brave And The Free — that’s three quarters done and one — A Fatal Stain — that’s started, and they both need to be finished ASAP so I can move on to other projects.  So, there it is.  I’ll be Nanoing and reporting on it.

It started badly as yesterday and today were consumed by what can only be called “stupid cat tricks.”  Miranda-cat swallowed what appears to be an entire spool of black sewing thread, causing us to take her to the emergency room yesterday.

For a while we feared surgery would happen, but it turns out no, she actually passed the thread after “a massive amount of laxative” (in the words of the vet’s assistant.)  She will be home as soon as daddy can pick her up, and I’m sure she’ll have words with us.  Meanwhile I’ll go and pick up the highschooler at three something, and then try to settle down and write.

  1. Bwahahaha! 10:20 AM Friday, November 4th. Just passed 11K words and the hunt for zombies is still in the “take them to the hospital” stage.

I think I like NaNoWriMo, but then it is encourageing the part of writing I really like. If it was “edit 50K words in a month, I’d run away as fast as I could . . . Oh wait, that novel I ought to be writing those last two scenes in and then polishing . . . I _am_ running away. What a horrible revalation.

    1. Pam, the thing is that I HAVE to rewrite the beginning of this book before I can write more. So my word count is probably 1k a day, because I’m adding it between the words already there.
During an interview today, it occurred to me that the problem is I know the world TOO well and am — probably — trying to cram too much into the beginning.

  2. Yep. It’s so much easier to just let the words flow. I’ve stopped briefly for some very, very loose plotting, just so I have a place to aim for, and a bit better idea about what scenes are needed.

Although zomies are awfully fun. When all else fails, have another zombie attack.

I do need to figure out which of the POV characters will be the main one, so his efforts can fail, and make the situation worse a couple of times before he tightens his belt, grabs the flame thrower and goes off to kill the zombie master.
