We’ve lived in Colorado Springs for close on to thirteen years. Over and over again we’ve driven past this little joint called Cy’s Burgers. Looked barely enough to sell burgers out of.
And then while Dan was looking at sources of organic beef, we found that’s what they serve. Also, they have wonderful milkshakes and a cult following.
So today we decided to go check it out.
The food is very nice. If you’re in Colorado Springs, go and check in out. Barely more expensive than the chain fast food joints but far and above better. Organic meat tastes like the food of my childhood. The fries are fresh-made and crispy and delicious. And the shakes will take forever to drink because they’re so thick.
Best of all, though, is the atmosphere. There’s a certain amount of self-conscious kitch — vinyl records on the wall, pictures of Elvis. But the thing is the place itself, the way it’s laid out and the little acoutrememnts, like the napkin holders are genuinely fifties — when the place opened.
I could see young men and women from the little working class neighborhoods around there flocking around it for a date and crowding the six indoor booths, the outdoor tables, or parking and getting curbside service. It felt like a trip in a time machine. I don’t know if this is a writer thing or if others live like this, but it was very vivid to me and made the whole experience interesting. :)
Cy’s drive in is at 1833 W. Uintah — if you’re in Colorado Springs, give them a try. If only they were open 24 hours they’d be perfect.

Sounds like a nice place to go for a meal. I love tiny places like that.
