    1. Indeed. Cardasians may have almost universally been a-holes, but they were competent ones.

(Presumably because the incompetents led rather abbreviated lives.)

  1. Actually, tens of thousands of Americans left the United States to join their comrades in the early Soviet Union. Few lived long enough to return and tell us about it, which is probably why nobody hears about it. But it did make it easier for the soviets to sell it.

Jewish copilots? Yeah. But the real problem is the Muslim copilot will stab your real pilot and try to crash your plane killing everyone on board in an act of jihad.

    Gul Newsom?

I can predict the future. Eventually, you’re going to need every round.

Don’t elect a communist from your sofa. Get out and vote.

    1. Those thousands are like the unburnt powder blown out of a gun barrel or the microbits leftover after a stick of dynamite explodes—helpless pawns obeying Arrhenius’ law or P. T. Barnum’s (more likely). The small fraction leftover does not deny the reaction wants to go to the right.

A federal judge on Oct. 1 threw out a case against a Jamaican woman who voted in a U.S. federal election, finding that the law that prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections is unconstitutional.

      1. I think a judge could declare a law unconstitutional, but he could be over-ruled by other judges.

Mind you, this judge is an idiot.

    1. For Sukkot, which ended Friday night, observant Jews build booths that are mostly open to the sky, and spend a few hours there each evening, enjoying life and discussing faith. It is to remember the time spent in the Wilderness of Sinai, and how G-d provided. It is the one time of the year big-city Jewish people build things with wood, nails, and so on, all at once. Thus the joking cartoon.

In the Communist “mandatory” pic, note that the pistol is a Walther P-38. This identifies them as being in the German Democratic Republic.

I live not far from Reno, Nevada. We no longer notice rental trucks going east on I-80, but on the rare occasion when we see one going WEST, we assume it’s either a hostler or someone going back for a second load.

I have a friend who’s one of those hostlers — his job is to fly to places like Texas or Florida and drive those trucks back to California. In the first 6 months of this year, he stacked up enough frequent flyer miles, hotel stays and pay to take three weeks off in Hawai’i.

But who else will be chained to their cubicle doing the tech work I refuse to pay enough for all those qualified American engineers to do so I can buy my third private jet?”

Not relevant to anything else, but in Manila at the moment with my wife, visiting her family. Our hotel adjoins a magnificent shopping mall, multi-level, and forever crowded and busy. A couple things I’ve noticed:

    • People like to bring their doggies, often dressed in cute little outfits, and very often wearing disposable diapers. I guess the mall is a reasonably safe, open space to walk one’s pets, although their paws get little traction on the marble floors. The diapers are a thoughtful courtesy.
    • Couples pushing strollers are just as likely to be transporting a doggy as an infant.
    • There are restaurants and food stands everywhere, all busy at all hours. Folks love to eat and socialize out here.
    • There’s also a chapel on one of the upper floors; we heard Mass there last week.

Well, I had to tell somebody…

    1. So… I once WROTE a test in the form of a short story with the Three Musketeers and Richelieu. It was an economics test and I was asked to explain mercantilism and give the pros and cons.
WHY did I do that? I don’t know. I hadn’t slept much in a week and it seemed logical.
The minute I turned it in, I was in fear of the teacher taking offense and giving me a 0.
I was fortunate. I did answer the question, and she was charmed. I had a hundred.

      1. Most digital cameras used charged coupled devices (CCDs), which (AFAIK) are built on silicon. Silicon isn’t silver, so works.

Nowadays, most (many?) mirrors use aluminum as the reflective layer. Do they reflect vampires?

      1. I’ve actually seen this in cars. An Uber (I don’t remember the make and model) I took the other day had a “rear view mirror” that was a rear view camera display. There was a small real mirror mounted above it in case the camera went out for some reason.

  12. If you, as a vampire, used video to show you yourself, would you use a mirror inversion to show yourself as you used to appear in mirrors, R-> L, L->R, or not?

      1. IIRC, in one of Saberhagen’s Dracula books, he had the Count posessing a mirror/screen with a camera in the frame sso he could maintain his own appearance. Apparently there’s still a servant problem at Castle Dracula….

    1. Actually, mirrors don’t reverse the image. They reflect everything straight back. The image just seems reversed because in order to face back at yourself, you would have to turn around. Your brain can’t handle the contradiction, so you blame the mirror. 😁

      1. Or, to say it another way:

If you hold printed material, as one example, up to a mirror, it appears reversed because you had to turn it away from yourself in order to see it in the mirror. If the print is on a substrate that lets enough light through for you to see it from the back while you are holding it up to the mirror, then it will still appear reversed, because you reversed it.

So yes, it looks backwards because it IS, not because the mirror did it.

  13. The image you see in a mirror, assuming you are not a vampire, is enantiomorphic. Go to a mirror and hold up your right hand: look carefully at your image, and you will see that your image is holding up a left hand! There are certain chemical compounds that come in left and right hand versions. The fancy scientific prefix is levo- and dextro- forms. Essentially you can be “mirror- reversed” if you where rotated through the fourth dimension by some means: teleportation gone wrong, higher dimensional beings playing a joke, etc. It’s like a three dimensional being “flipping over” a Flatlander. But it would be deadly for you (and perhaps the Flatlander) your body is made of many levo-type molecules, which become dextro-types after your fourth dimensional “inversion.” You will begin to starve to death as you can not assimilate the “now” wrong handed molecules of normal food (levo-types) into your now reversed moleculular proteins, DNA, etc. The whole issue sprung into my mind because I use a video “mirroring” app on my iPad for various reasons. It shows me as I look, not as I see myself in a mirror. My hair is parted on the wrong side! Oftentimes you see video online that is mirror reversed: you can tell because writing on tee shirts is reversed, and on signs, driver side is on the “wrong” side but is posting from North America, and so forth. I think this is done so people can see themselves in their video selfies the way they see themselves in a mirror. So it naturally occurred to me that vampires would have to choose which way to see themselves in their self videos. To play around with the idea, maybe they become invisible in a video if the mirror reversing effect is turned on: maybe that could be tied in with fourth dimensional inversion. The most sensible reason vampires might hate mirrors is that they can see how they truly look, being undead and perhaps not as beautiful as they appear to their prey by means of the glamour. Just some thoughts.
